Birmingham Resilience Team has been informed that the incident has now ended with a safe and successful conclusion.  Birmingham City Council Highways is liaising with the Police as all roads and pedestrian cordons related to this incident have been lifted.

The incident at Paradise Circus is continuing. All information below is still current. Please follow the advice below in relation to traffic and travel updates.  

Presently traffic is heavy but it is moving.

Update @ 11:00, Thursday 30 September

The incident at Paradise Circus is continuing. West Midlands Police are still talking to a man who is situated on the bridge above Paradise Circus, near to the Chamberlain Square entrance to Paradise Forum. For safety reasons the section of Paradise Circus below the bridge remains closed.

Birmingham City Council officers are liaising with Police to continue to manage traffic and disruption to pedestrians. Great Charles Street/Paradise Circus remain closed to traffic. 

Birmingham City Council officers are liaising with the Police at the scene and are assisting in redirecting pedestrians.

Both the Central Library and Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery are open to the public. The Central Library can be accessed via an entrance in Paradise Forum, which can be accessed only by its entrance onto Centenary Square. The Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery can be accessed by pedestrians via the Waterhall and Great Charles Street entrances.

Birmingham City Council will be issuing a press statement to confirm Central Library and Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery are open.

Paradise Forum is open to the public from Centenary Square but not from the Chamberlain Square entrance.

Radio WM is continuing to broadcast information about this incident. Traffic and travel information can be accessed via www.help2travel.co.uk or www.networkwestmidlands.com or 0871 200 2233.

There is currently no indication of an end time for this incident. Birmingham City Council will continue to monitor traffic flows and implement appropriate measures to ease congestion later today for the evening rush hour.  

If you usually walk or cycle into the City Centre via the area affected then please plan an alternative route.

If traveling into or through the City Centre, continue to listen to local radio for regular traffic news, as they will provide the most current updates.

 

Update @ 06:00, Thursday 30 September

The incident at Paradise Circus is continuing. West Midlands Police are still talking to a man who is situated on the bridge above Paradise Circus, near to the Chamberlain Square entrance to Paradise Forum. For safety reasons the section of Paradise Circus below the bridge remains closed.

Road closures are in place on Paradise Circus between Great Charles Street and Paradise Street. Traffic is being prevented from joining Great Charles St at the exit to St Chads Tunnel and instead being directed through the Queensway Tunnel. Traffic is being allowed to cross Great Charles St at Newhall Street, but expect there to be delays and congestion at this point.

There is currently no indication of an end time for this incident. Because of this it is predicted that there will be traffic congestion in and around the area again through the rush hour this morning.

Paradise Forum and Chamberlain Square will also remain closed to pedestrians, so if you usually walk or cycle into the City Centre this way then plan an alternative route.

If travelling into or through the City Centre this morning continue to listen to local radio for regular traffic news, as they will provide the most current updates.

 

Update @ 20:55, Wednesday 29 September

Incident still ongoing, with no indication of resolution time. Small road closures (part of Paradise Circus and Great Charles St leading to Paradise Circus) still in force which continue to cause localised congestion. Otherwise, traffic appears to be flowing freely around the city.

No futher update will be given tonight unless there is a significant change in circumstances.

Local radio will continue with regular traffic updates.

There is no risk to the public from this event.

Incident continuing and part of Paradise Circus remains closed causing continued traffic disruption, particularly to inbound traffic. Paradise Forum and Chamberlain Square remain closed to pedestrians.  Regular traffic updates available on local radio.

The police are dealing with an incident at Paradise Forum. Paradise Forum  is closed to traffic from Great Charles Street. Chamberlain Square is closed to pedestrians. Further updates will be provided.
