Working together for a resilient Birmingham.

Communities Join Together to Discuss Resilience

Delegates converged on the Council House on a mild spring evening on 23rd March for a Joint Meeting of the Birmingham Communities and Neighbourhoods Resilience Group and Birmingham Resilience Champions.

There was a busy agenda, with attendees being introduced to Alistair Campbell, the Council’s new Head of Resilience and Local Engineering, and John Blakemore, the newly appointed Director of Highways and Resilience. Presentations were delivered to demonstrate how community resilience will remain at the forefront of Council activity, and questions were fielded from those in attendance.

There was also the opportunity to take in a presentation delivered by David Sheard, Community Area Support Manager for Cumbria City Council, which focused on Cumbria’s response to the floods in 2009. The emphasis on community resilience was undoubtedly a key aspect in the successful response to the flooding.

This was followed by Jeff March from West Midlands Fire Service Search and Rescue Team, who delivered a moving presentation focussing on their recent mission to Christchurch in New Zealand to assist with the response to the earthquake that devastated the city on February 22nd 2011. This included photographs showing the scale of the impact the earthquake had. It is clear that the bravery and unwavering dedication of the team was fully appreciated by the citizens of Christchurch and New Zealand.
