Working together for a resilient Birmingham.

Communities Prepared National Group

The third Communities Prepared National Group (CPNG) met on 21 April 2015 at the London Fire Brigade HQ, organised by Resilience & Emergencies Division – Department. For Communities and Local Government (DCLG) and CIvil Contingencies Secretariat – Cabinet Office.  The CPNG was formed in direct response to Local Resilience Forums (LRF) requests for more help at the strategic level in engaging and facilitating community resilience locally.  As Government doesn’t have all the answers the group was created as a forum to share good practice and lessons learnt amongst local responders from LRFs across the country.

The meeting was well attended with over 40 Emergency Planners participating from across the country, including Jawaid Akhtar from Birmingham Resilience Team. Presentations and discussions included:

Resilience & Emergencies Division (DCLG)

Warning and Informing –  Civil Contingencies Secretariat (Cabinet Office)

Social Action, Responsibility & Heroism (SARAH) Act 2015 – Ministry of Justice

To encourage people to volunteer and participate where previously they would have been reluctant to in case they might be sued e.g., clearing snow, giving a neighbour a lift to hospital etc.

This reduces the likelihood of negligence claims if acting for the ‘benefit of society’ and acting ‘responsibly’

Community Safety – London Fire Brigade

Developing flood training packages & training library – Cornwall Community Flood Forum & Environment Agency

Communities Prepared Hub – Civil Contingencies Secretariat

National Capabilities Survey, Community Resilience: Analysis & Implications – Civil Contingencies Secretariat

Participants found it to be a useful and productive meeting.
