School Closure Protocol

Arrangements in the event of extreme weather conditions for Birmingham City Council schools.

The decision to close individual schools during inclement weather continues to lie with headteachers in consultation with their chairs of governors. This arrangement enables decisions to be taken quickly and in the light of local circumstances.

In the rare event of EXTREME WEATHER CONDITIONS (eg. heavy snowfall) across the whole of the City, the local authority may take a central decision to close all schools.

small_schoolA central decision on whether all schools should close or stay open will be made by the Strategic Director for Children, Young People & Families in consultation with the Cabinet Member for Children, Young People & Families.

Any such decision affecting all schools will be made by 6.45am at the latest. The decision will then be announced through Heart FM, Radio WM and BRMB and also on the Birmngham City Council weather disruption page (http://www.birmingham.gov.uk/weather-disruption)

It is accepted that a minority of schools will not be able to comply with a central decision to remain open because of factors unique to the school e.g. burst pipes, heating failure or because of particular physical difficulties of the school site.

In such circumstances it will be for the headteacher to:

1) communicate this decision to the Local Authority by ringing the School Support Office or by emailing the school closure email address

2) communicate this decision to parents via the local radio stations either by ringing the radio stations or by emailing them.  Emails are picked up promptly and closures will be put on air on a regular basis.
