Volunteers test local flood plan

Community volunteers from Selly Park South Neighbourhood Forum held their annual flood exercise on Saturday 21 May 2011.

This is the second year the exercise has been held following a number of flooding incidents that have taken place around Selly Park South, most recently in 2008.

The exercise was led by John Clayton, volunteer flood action co-ordinator for the group along with flood wardens and other volunteers from the area who carried out their roles as if there was a real flooding incident.

Jawaid Akhtar, Emergency Planning Officer, who supported the exercise on behalf of the Birmingham Resilience Team said, “The plan was executed successfully as all procedures of activation and response went like clockwork. It was felt that it was worthwhile running the exercise as it built the confidence and experience of all the volunteers.”

Representatives from the Environment Agency, Birmingham Resilience Team and Witton Flood Group also participated in the exercise as observers.
